Psyllium Husks

Published by Fat Man at 10:41 am under General

Bearing in mind I’ve not used the toilet in three days other than to empty my bladder, I figured it was time to take ‘remedial action’… or maybe preventative steps would be a better description. I don’t have any ‘problems’ other than the ill-defined psychological concerns some of us get when we don’t ‘go’.

Obviously I expected to use the loo less frequently simply because I’m eating far less than ever before nevertheless I figure I ought to go now and then if only to keep up appearances. For this reason, I ’started adding two tablespoons of psyllium husks to my morning shake. Believe it or not it made the shake taste even better.

Psyillium Plant

Why psyllium? Simply because the stuff is *so* good at what it does. Despite being virtually inert within the body, it has a marked effect on GI transit, lowering cholesterol, assisting in the treatment of diabetes, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and strangely, both constipation *and* diarrhoea! (by the way, the links I added to the name lead you to their Wikipedia entry).

This mornings shake was Banana Malt and I’ll try it with the other varieties over the next few days, I can’t believe that psyllium husks share so natural an affinity with bananas that each tastes better with the addition of the other, but you never know!! :)

As usual, I’ll keep you posted.

Can you mix Psyllium Husks in with food like cereal and porridge?

I’ve mixed the husks into any foods that are moist (e.g. soups, stews and the like) and they’ve been fine. Got to admit mixing them into green salad was never a success… but into cole slaw etc… no problems.

    Best of luck.

I’ve been adding two or three tablespoons of psyllium husks to my cereal (cornflakes or wheatbix) since I noticed they are much reduced in kilojoules and much greater in fibre than wheatbran. the result is that I dont feel hungry until two or three hours after I would with bran, and my ‘movements’ are easier and feel more productive? I am also trying to lose weight and I am waiting to see any extra benefit from psyllium husks, I have only used them for a week so far, but so far, I’m impressed!
